With the transformation of the energy system, buildings are becoming a central interface of the energy transition. A Home Energy Management System (HEMS) provides the necessary link between these systems. However, the market is non-transparent, and practical implementation is complex. This raises the following questions: Which Home Energy Management Systems are currently available on the German market, and how can these systems be characterised and differentiated?
Our climate goals are based on the decarbonisation, decentralisation, and digitalisation of our energy system. This is particularly evident in the practical implementation within our buildings: the expansion of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the installation of heat pumps, the development of charging hubs for electric vehicles, the integration of thermal and electrical storage systems, interaction with power grids, and a shared interface in the form of a HEMS. Due to inconsistent terminology for such management systems, a working definition was developed for the following market overview.
